Natural Treatments for Breakouts
The holidays are a joyous, wonderful time to enjoy and catch-up with friends and loved ones. However, the stretch from Thanksgiving through the New Year can take a toll on your complexion. Lack of sleep, stress, late nights, and crazy days can cause breakouts. Here are some of my favorite, quick remedies for those surprise blemishes, fresh from you kitchen.

honey
Use this to sweet treat to help attract dirt, oil and clean skin with breakouts. Bees release a glucose enzyme when creating honey that is a natural antiseptic and has antibacterial properties. When applied topically, it draws body fluids and nutrients to the area assisting in cell growth and scar prevention.
~lie down, drape a warm, damp towel on face to open pores
~relax for 5 minutes
~using clean fingertips, apply honey to your face and neck in gentle upward, circular motions
~rinse off, gently using warm, damp towel to assist

Honey is also readily available in the organic form! Pick some up from your local farmer's market.

flax seed
this amazing ingredient tames a blemish quicker than any salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or other zit cream I've ever tried. I always keep some fresh flax seed handy in the fridge (for complexion purposes alone!)
~Simply sprinkle ground flax in the palm of your clean hand, and add a few drops warm water or aloe juice to form a paste
~Apply to blemish, leave on like a mask for 20 min. rinse with warm water.

Flax seed can be found at Trader Joe's or health food stores. I've even seen it at many supermarkets here in California. If you can't find ground flax seed, you can do it yourself in a clean coffee grinder.

If I have a bad breakout and the time, I like to combine these treatments. The flax seed treatment can also be left on overnight to calm a red, inflamed zit, just don't forget to change your pillowcase in the AM!

The Fire through my Window

My hometown has been on fire for the past day and a half; I've been watching it through my office window. It's been a rather surreal experience to see a natural disaster, so dangerous and so close, and not be able to do anything about it. Over the past 6+ years living in Santa Barbara, I've experienced wildfires, but nothing claiming so many homes that I could actually see from my front porch.

As Peter headed down the street to pick-up dinner Thurs. night, he came running back exclaiming, "Get on some shoes and get out here!" As we walked towards the street corner I saw the hillside engulfed in flames. Peter, Surf (our black lab) and I headed up the Carrillo hill where we stood with a large group watching booms of fire explode in the dark sky. The wildfire spread rapidly, hitting propane tanks and burning houses to the ground. My heart sank as I thought about the families those homes represented. By 7:30, we were sitting in the pitch dark on our front porch watching as the fire moved closer towards town. Power went out all over the city, leaving the glowing fire as the sole light source. Winds on Thurs. evening spread the fires so quickly that firefighters struggled to contain it. I nervously awoke many times Thurs. night to peer out my office window, knowing I was safe inside with my windows shut, but people just 2 miles away were evacuating their homes. I watched Thursday night's flames turn to a thick wall of gray smoke on the hillside Friday afternoon.

I am in awe, and so thankful to all those who are risking their lives to keep the community safe. The amazing fact is very few people have been hurt or lives lost. I am so thankful we live in a community where people value each other, life and love over possessions. Those I've seen interviewed and friends evacuated from their homes feel blessed and thankful to be safe with their loved ones at their side.

As I look out the window this morning, the smoke is clearing and the wind has shifted away from the city. So many have expressed concern, thoughts, and prayers to keep safe. I feel hopeful, and grateful we live in a community grounded in both support and perspective. We all love this place, and this tragedy is showing the wonderful side of humanity that is Santa Barbara. When fear and disaster approach, what's really important, anyway?

Green Spa Treatments: Fresh From Your Kitchen

Tired of spending boku $$$ on fancy eye de-puffer creams that don't seem to measure up?

This recipe is one of my favorites, also one of the cheapest and easiest; you can whip this delight up in no time. Okay, I admit sometimes I wish I kept this stuff on hand in the fridge at all times... but really it's best when freshly made.

Works fabulously in conjunction with the organic rose and grape serum to treat fine lines and revitalize delicate, sensitive skin around the eye area.

Cool Cucumber Under Eye Mask
Ingredients
1/2 of a peeled cucumber
1t aloe vera gel
1 capsule of vitamin E

Place cucumber and aloe in blender. Poke vitamin E capsule with pin and squeeze liquid into the blender. Mix it up, transfer to container with tight cover, apply under eyes (also works as a facial mask if skin is puffy) Lie down and take a load off for 10 minutes. Gently remove with soft cloth.

Your cucumber eye concoction will keep in the fridge for a few days, but always best when made fresh!

What it Does
Cucumber is a mild astringent that helps to relieve puffiness. Aloe moisturizes and combats puffy, swollen skin. Vitamin E is a rich antioxidant.

Revitalizing Lemon & Ginger Bath
Ingredients
1/4 C chopped ginger root
1/2 C grated lemon peel
2T whole oats
1/4 C dried or fresh minced basil

What it does
Ginger helps to promote circulation and revitalize the body. Basil is known to regenerate mental powers, oats soften and soothe the skin, lemon cleanses and stimulates the system
